17th 18th Century Continental bust of a religious icon. It maybe Italian or French. Pure sheets of silver inlaid on a copper plate. Pure silver does not tarnish. This type of Mercury Silvering has been done since the middle ages. Parcel gilt on the floral robe.. The copper is attached to a wood and gesso box painted a light blue. Beautiful Repousse and chased work on the bust and base.
Our research indicates that most of these pieces are in Museums.
